World Health Organization (WHO) Director General Tedros Tedros said in Geneva on the 12, due to the novel coronavirus epidemic and vaccine supply imbalance, the global COVID-19 is facing a serious situation.
“The mutant novel Coronavirus Delta strain is sweeping the world at an extremely rapid rate, leading to a surge in confirmed cases and deaths of the new coronavirus,” Tedseh said at a press conference. Confirmed cases of the new coronavirus worldwide increased last week for the fourth week in a row, and deaths rose again after 10 consecutive weeks of decline. The Delta strain has now appeared in at least 104 countries and territories and is expected to soon become the dominant novel coronavirus in global fashion.
Tedros said the rapid spread of the Delta strain, which has resulted in large numbers of hospitalizations and deaths, has placed extreme pressure on the countries concerned, especially low-income countries with limited health resources. At the same time, there are serious imbalances and inequity in the global supply of vaccines. Some countries and regions are already vaccinating booster shots, while others are unable to provide even basic protection for health workers and the most vulnerable groups.
Tedros expressed concern about the elimination of public health and social protection measures announced by some countries. He believes these countries should consider the impact on health workers and health systems.
